These diseases affect the Retina and are usually found under the general category of Retinal Degeneration. Retinitis Pigmentosa is an eye disease that affects a person's night vision and peripheral vision. Symptoms start with decreased night vision and later progress to a diminishing of peripheral vision. The rate of decline varies depending on the genetic makeup of the disorder and also varies somewhat in individuals. It is a genetic disorder that is usually hereditary. Usher Syndrome affects the eyesight in a manner similar to Retinitis Pigmentosa but also affects the hearing. The rate of degeneration is faster than with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of blindness in people over 55, but young people can be affected as well. This diseases affects the center of the Retina. Some specific forms of RP and related conditions include Leber's Congenital Amaurosis, Stargardt's Disease, Cone-Rod Dystrophy, Best's Disease, and Choroideremia, and Gyrate Atrophy. |

My name is John McMahon I am from Walpole, Ma. USA I've spent 27 years fighting fires & saving lives. I was told to quit my job by the "experts" @ Massachusettes Eye & Ear when I was a Rookie Lieutenant. I did not quit! I became an EMT then I went on to become a Deputy Fire Chief and then came in second on our Fire Chief Exam. I'm married. I have 4 of my own children, 3 step-children and 8 grandchildren. I gave up driving and I am slowing down enough to stop spilling things, during meal time, at home and in Restaurants. I started skiing when I was fifty years old and will do it as long as I possibly can! I had to quit work (retire) because I couldn't do the job safely anymore! I didn't want to quit! I had to because of deteriorating eyesight! I have often wondered how other people in dangerous occupations cope with RP. PRIVACY NOTE: We take your privacy very seriously.
